Third-party rights, licences and attribution/copyright statements that need to be used when reproducing our geographical material.

Terms and conditions of supply

Information on uk-air.defra.gov.uk  is published by The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Devolved Administrations under the Open Government Licence (OGL) v3.0 and subject to the terms described in the "licence" or "constraints" of the OGL, except where otherwise noted below.  Under the OGL you are free to:

  • copy, publish, distribute and transmit the information
  • adapt the information
  • exploit the information commercially and non-commercially for example, by combining it with other information, or by including it in your own product or application

You must, where you do any of the above, acknowledge Defra and uk-air.defra.gov.uk as the source of the information by including the following attribution statement in reports, web pages or derived data products and, where possible, provide a link to the OGL licence.

Third-Party rights

We create a number of data sets that include the intellectual property rights (IPR) of other organisations; you should be aware of third-party rights and any need for licences. In these cases you should use the appropriate attribution/copyright statement(s) and apply for your own licence to the relevant organisation where needed.

You need the following licences for each category of product issued by us, complete with the appropriate attribution/copyright statement.

Digital boundaries, point locations and reference maps

Digital boundary products, point locations and reference maps are supplied under the Open Government Licence and the Ordnance Survey INSPIRE End user licence as well as licensing terms of the Northern Ireland Land and Property Services (NIDirect page). For commercial use you need to obtain your own licence from Ordnance Survey and the Land and Property Service.

Use of the Northern Ireland data contained within our products constitutes acceptance of the Northern Ireland licensing terms and conditions.

You must use the following copyright statements when you reproduce or use this material:

Postcode products (including postcode lookups)

Any data derived from postcode products (OS Code-Point® polygons) are subject to the Ordnance Survey INSPIRE End user licence. For commercial use you need to obtain your own licence from Ordnance Survey

To use the Northern Ireland data (postcodes starting with “BT”), you need a separate licence for commercial use direct from Land and Property Services. Details of the available licences can be found on the NIDirect page

Use of the Northern Ireland data contained within our postcode derived products constitutes acceptance of the Northern Ireland licensing terms and conditions.

Address products

Our address products (derived from OS AddressBase® for Great Britain and OSNI Pointer for Northern Ireland) are subject to the Open Government Licence, the Ordnance Survey INSPIRE End user licence, as well as licensing terms of the Northern Ireland Land and Property Services (NIDirect page). For commercial use you need to obtain your own licence from Ordnance Survey and the Land and Property Service.

Use of the Northern Ireland data contained within our products constitutes acceptance of the Northern Ireland licensing terms and conditions.

The UK data in AddressBase® is provided by GeoPlace, a limited liability partnership between the Local Government Group and Ordnance Survey.

Copyright and reproduction

You may re-use this information (not including logos or Northern Ireland data) free of charge in any format or medium, under the terms of the relevant data owners licence. In addition, the following attribution statements must be acknowledged or displayed whenever the owners data is used:
