UKEAP: MARGA Network

What is the purpose of the network?

The Monitor for Aerosols and Gases in Ambient air (MARGA) network provides the regulatory requirement to characterise particulate matter at background locations. In addition to measuring the concentration of the major ions in the PM10 and PM2.5 size fractions, gaseous concentrations are also measured hourly. Measurements are made at Auchencorth Moss and Chilbolton. Both these sites are in rural background locations away from significant sources of air pollution. Measurements from the network allows detailed support source apportionment and allows us to understand better the role played by the long-range transport of air pollution in forming particulate matter in urban areas.

What is measured?

K+, Na+, NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl, NO3-, SO42-, SO2, HCl, HNO3, HONO, NH3
