Local Air Quality Management

Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) provides the framework under Part IV of the Environment Act 2021 within which air quality is managed by local authorities.

The Local Air Quality Management process requires Local Authorities to periodically review and assess the current and future quality of air in their areas. A Local Authority must designate an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) if any of the Air Quality Objectives set out in the regulations are not likely to be met over a relevant time period. https://laqm.defra.gov.uk/

This page provides information to help inform the public about the state of air quality in their local area and what action their Local Authority is taking to improve it.

Local Air Quality Dashboard (LAQ Dashboard)

The Local Air Quality Dashboard (LAQ Dashboard) enables you to check your local air quality, either by postcode or local authority name. It shows the latest local measurements for the highest profile pollutants (NO2 and particulate matter) and summarises the local policy measures being implemented to improve air quality.

Smoke Control Areas (SCAs)

Smoke Control Areas (SCAs) are specific locations defined by Local Authorities to prohibit burning in proximity to residential areas. For more information on SCAs, please visit this page.

Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs)
