• How does the UK determine the number of sites required for monitoring? Is there a map or list available?

  DIRECTIVE 2008/50/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 21 May 2008 (PDF 1.57 MB) on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe specifies the number of monitoring points required in a zone or agglomeration dependent upon the maximum pollutant concentrations.

  For the UK, the number of monitoring stations required was estimated and additional stations installed where a requirement was identified in 2000 and 2006. Therefore the UK has sufficient monitoring stations to meet the requirement of the Directive. The number of sites is being reviewed again in 2011.
