National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory

PCB Speciation Methodology

PCB emissions may be grouped into two source sectors:-

In this version of the NAEI (1998 Inventory) it has only been possible to make speciated emission estimates of PCBs from the non-combustion sources. This is because there is not enough reliable information to enable reasonable estimates from combustion sources to be made. However, it is important to highlight that these non-combustion sources account for some 93% of the total mass emission of PCBs.

The speciation of non-combustion sources is conducted using the method outlined as follows:-

The overall equation outlining the calculations is shown below:

Contribution of congener A from Aroclor X= (fraction of A in X) x (US sales*2 of X/US sales*2 of Aroclors used for source S) x Release from source S per year.

* sales from 1957-1975

This calculation process is used to speciate Capacitors, Transformers, fragmentisers and landfill sources. It was assumed that the fragmentisers’ and landfill’s PCB inputs are mainly due to capacitors in domestic appliances such as fridges and therefore the speciation profile is the same as the releases from capacitor leakage.

Emissions from electric arc furnaces comprise inputs from both capacitors and transformers. The speciation ratio used was derived from the speciation of the emissions from capacitors and transformers and scaled using information relating to the sales of PCBs (sales figures for use in capacitors and transformers). Again the assumption was made that there was no degradation of PCBs during the process.

No speciation data has been found for combustion processes and other industrial processes and so no profiles can currently be made for these sources. However test work is underway to help speciate these sources. Progress on this area of speciation will be reported in the next annual NAEI report.
